KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Women's Soccer downed non-conference opponent Illinois State (1-1-0), 2-0, this afternoon in a driving rain from Durwood Soccer Stadium. The win sends the Roos to a 2-0-0 mark for the first time since the 2015 season.
"I could not be more proud of our entire soccer family right now," said head coach Chris Cissell. "To start the season with shutout victories over two quality Missouri Valley Conference sides is an exciting way for us to begin our season. The girls showed a lot of competitive spirit and grit to compete today in such horrific weather conditions."
The defense was again tremendous, collecting its second-straight shutout to begin the year. WAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Abby Small and company limited the Redbird offense to four shots on the net. Afton Fennewald got the start in goal for the first time this year and went the full 90 minutes. She posted four saves in the shutout victory.
Offensively, freshman forward Lindsey Prokop showed why the Roos recruited her. She banged a shot through the hands of goalkeeper Haley Smith from the right corner of the box. Her first career marker came in the 15th minute, with an assist credited to sophomore All-American Rylan Childers.
The score stayed 1-0 in favor of Kansas City at the half.
In the 54th minute, sophomore midfielder Amanda Sampson hooked a corner kick into the box and junior midfielder Liz Mann used her head to push across the second goal. The score extended the Roo lead to 2-0.
