KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Women's Soccer team (1-0-0) began its 2019 season with a 1-0 victory against Missouri Valley Conference opponent Indiana State (0-1-0) tonight at Durwood Soccer Stadium. The back-to-back defending conference champions have now won its season-opener in five of the last seven years.
Sophomore All-American Rylan Childers had the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 48th minute. A Roos attacker drew a holding foul against an Indiana State defender in the box, which led to the penalty kick opportunity.
Childers posted her 12th career goal, which found the left corner of the net past Sycamore goalkeeper Hannah Sullivan.
"I was really proud of the overall team effort," said head coach Chris Cissell. "To start the season with a win and a shutout over a very strong Indiana State side is always a great way for our soccer family to start the season. Thank you to our fans for coming out and giving us great support again tonight."
Senior goalkeeper Erin Roth posted five total saves to claim the 90-minute shutout for the Roos. As a team, Kansas City had 10 shutouts last year in 21 matches and the program continued that defensive dominance beginning the 2019 year.
Kansas City held a 13-11 advantage in total shots. The Roos spent 53% of the game in the attacking zone and overall held total possession 55% of the time. The contest had zero yellow cards.
