Olivia Platt scored the opening goal but ORU scored a pair in the second half to move on
TULSA, Okla. - The fifth-seed in the Summit League Championships, Kansas City Women's Soccer gave top-seeded Oral Roberts all it could handle. The Roos scored the opening goal and set the pace for the entire first half. Even after conceding a pair of goals in back-to-back minutes, the Roos continued to fight, creating opportunities in the waning moments of the match. In spite of the Roos' efforts, the Golden Eagles would move on and secure a spot in the finals in a 2-1 decision.
Oral Roberts made some early mistakes on the defensive end, creating chances for KC. The Roos earned four corner kicks in the first 18 minutes, scoring the opening goal on the fourth. Delfina Zolesio Fernandez Blanco sent the kick within the six yard box, bouncing around until an ORU defender attempted to clear it. Olivia Platt stood in the way of the clearance opportunity, deflecting the ball into the net and giving Kansas City an early advantage.Â
The Roos maintained the lead through the rest of the half, leaning on the stopping ability of Anika Patton in goal. She made three first half saves, including a block of Zoe McCabe's breakaway shot in the 40th minute that carried KC into half with a one-goal edge.
Coming out of the break, ORU found success in the attack and quickly stole the lead. The Golden Eagles equalized in the 50th minute and scored again just 71 seconds later on a game-winner from Marlee Fort. Kansas City's attack was kept quiet for the next 30 minutes, but found its pace again in the final 10. Riley Porter worked up-field and created a chance with a crossing pass that slid along the face of the goal, but KC was whistled for an offside. A free kick in the 89th minute found its way to Kaitlyn Edwards, but her header was scooped up by ORU's Eirini Manoukaraki.
The final horn closed the chapter on the Roos' season, the best since 2019. Kansas City finishes the year with a 9-8-3 record and carried the #5 seed into the Summit League Championships, both bests in the Jess Smith era. Limited by injury in her first three years as a Roo, Olivia Platt put together a First Team All-League year and scored goals in both of KC's postseason games. She finishes nine goals and finished with 23 points this season, joining Delfina Zolesio's 11 goals and 25 points in the top-10 in single season program history. Graduate transfer Riley Porter's career finished in her hometown, claiming First Team All-League status behind a four goal, three assist year. Ashley Koch was the team's top distributor, finishing with seven assists and claiming Honorable Mention All-League accolades. The consistent presence of Madelyn Muhr, Kinsley Smith and Emilia Zolesio Fernandez Blanco bolstered the back line, playing 4,942 minutes on the year.
Kansas City's future looks bright - underclassmen accounted for 71 starts on the season. The Roos will look to build on this year's success in 2026 with an opportunity to play in the postseason in two-straight seasons for the first time since 2018-19.
