Omaha, Neb. -- Julie Hartung belted her second home run of the year in the nightcap, but UMKC dropped both halves of its doubleheader against Creighton. The Kangaroos fell 7-1 in the first game and 11-1 after five innings in the second.
In the first game, Creighton opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, pushing a run across on four hits. The Bluejays added two in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
The Kangaroos were able to pull one back in the top of the fourth, although a helpful bounce kept it at just one. Alicia Baker led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Hartung walked to put two runners on the bases for Lauren Cross. Cross belted a double to right center, but the shot bounded off the artificial turf and over the fence to hold Hartung at third. UMKC wasn't able to push across another run in the inning.
Creighton answered with two in the bottom of the fourth, adding two in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-1 win in the first game.
In the second game, the Bluejays opened up the scoring with a four-run first inning to chase starter Taya Upkes from the game.
UMKC pulled one back in the second, as Hartung sent a shot deep over the fence in right center.
The Bluejays pushed the margin back to four in the bottom half of the inning, answering with their own homer to right center.
Creighton added two in the third before putting the game out of reach with four in the fourth.
The Kangaroos put runners on the corners in the top of the fifth, as Ashton Kistler walked and Monica Canisales reached on a Creighton error, but UMKC couldn't prolong the game as Ashley Whiteside grounded out to third to end the game.
Samantha Hurst took the loss in the first game for UMKC, with Upkes charged with the decision in the nightcap. The Kangaroos (3-20) return to action in The Summit League this weekend, taking on North Dakota State in a three-game set. The series - moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., due to unplayable field conditions in Fargo, N.D. - begins with a noon doubleheader Saturday.
