Omaha, Neb. -- In the first games of a three-game series originally scheduled to be played in Fargo, N.D., the Kangaroos made the most of two Bison wild pitches to pick up a 1-0 victory in the second game against North Dakota State. The result was good for a split on the afternoon, as UMKC fell in the first game by a 7-0 margin.
UMKC threatened in the top of the first, as Monica Canisales singled up the middle, but the Kangaroos couldn't push across a run.
North Dakota State got on the board in the bottom of the first, adding three in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Bison were able to post three more runs in the bottom of the fifth for the final margin.
To lead off the second game, Ashley Whiteside made the most of a strikeout, as North Dakota State's catcher wasn't able to handle the wild offering from Bekki Rasmussen as Whiteside sprinted to first. A Canisales sacrifice moved the freshman to second, with another wild pitch putting her on third. A single from Alicia Baker plated Whiteside, with the single run able to hold up.
Samantha Hurst started both contests for UMKC, picking up her first shutout and second win of the season. She struckout four batters over the two games. Taya Upkes recorded her second save of the year in the 1-0 shutout.
The Kangaroos (4-21, 2-8 Summit) will wrap up the series against the Bison on Sunday, with the first pitch slated to be tossed at 11 a.m.
