Cedar City, Utah -- The Kangaroos rapped out 18 hits in Friday's doubleheader against
Southern Utah, picking up a 3-2 win in the opener before dropping the
nightcap by a 7-6 margin. Alicia Baker went 3-for-4 in the second game, needing just a home run to hit for the cycle.
UMKC threatened in the top of the second, as Carli Slagle hit a double to center, advancing to third on a single by Julie Hartung. The Kangaroos couldn't push across a run, however, as the next two batters struck out to strand runners at second and third.
Southern Utah also threatened in its half of the second, but the Kangaroos were able to keep the scoreboard clean.
UMKC wasn't so lucky in the bottom of the fourth, but would strike back with three runs in the top of the fifth. Lauren Cross led off the inning with a double, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by Monica Canisales. Lauren Rodrigues drove in two runs with a double to right, but wasn't able to beat the throw at third.
The Thunderbirds were able to pull one back in the bottom of the fifth, but UMKC was able to close out the game and pick up its first win in The Summit League.
In the second game, UMKC chased the Southern Utah starter from the game quickly, allowing her just one-third of an inning as the Kangaroos pushed across three runs.
Southern Utah scored one in the bottom of the first before taking a 5-3 lead with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the second.
The Thunderbirds pushed out to a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth, collecting two triples in the frame.
UMKC was able to collect itself and get right back into the game in the top of the fifth. Baker picked up a triple of her own to score Canisales before being plated by a single from Slagle.
The Kangaroo defense kept Southern Utah off the board in the fifth and sixth innings, setting up a rally chance as Baker doubled in a run in the top of the sixth to pull UMKC to within a 7-6 margin.
Julie Hartung led off the inning with a walk, advancing to second through a Hurst sacrifice, but the Kangaroos couldn't finish the comeback.
Samantha Hurst took both decisions for the Kangaroos to push her record to 1-9 on the year, with Taya Upkes earning her first career save in the opener.
The teams will finish out the series on Saturday with a single game, set for a 1 p.m. CDT start.
