Cedar City, Utah -- After pumping out 18 hits in two contests on Friday, the Kangaroo bats couldn't find life on Saturday as UMKC fell by an 8-0 count to Southern Utah. Samantha Hurst and Monica Canisales each collected singles in the loss.
Southern Utah opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with two runs, adding two in the fourth.
Hurst tried to spark a rally for the Kangaroos with two outs in the top of the fifth, singling to right, but it stalled as Taya Upkes struck out to end the frame.
After the Thunderbirds loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, Caroline Fernandez brought the game to an early end, hitting a grand slam to left field.
Upkes took the loss for UMKC, which falls to 3-17 on the year. The Kangaroos continue the road swing on Tuesday, heading up I-29 to take on Creighton. The doubleheader is set for a 3 p.m. start.
