Roos Defeat Louisiana Tech, Fall to South Dakota
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Volleyball team opened up their KC Roos Klassic with some success on Friday morning, taking down previously undefeated Louisiana Tech, 3-1 (27-29, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22). The Roos used a scorching service game from Alli Schomers to quiet the Lady Techsters, serving at a 90.1% clip and sending across 13 aces.
Schomers had seven of the 13 aces by her self, matching Louisiana Tech's team total. Her seven aces was only two short of the program record for most service aces in a four-set match, set by Kelly Northup against Missouri in 1992.
"That's why she's our first server," Associate Head Coach Trent Jones said. "She's been a great server since the day she walked on campus and we've just helped her improve it. When you're in a rhythm and you're feeling it, you can just go back there and let it fly."
The Roos were led in the attack by Melanie Brecka, who finished with 17 kills on .344 hitting. Seventeen was her highest kill total since she went for 20 kills against CSU Bakersfield last November.
Kansas City had less success against South Dakota later in the night. The Coyotes jumped on the Roos from the get go, and KC never had a chance, falling 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-16).
Perhaps the lone bright spot for the Roos was the performance of Ty Lukes, who was the only Roo to end in double digit kills. She sent home 11 kills on .600 hitting and aided defensively with three block assists. However, the rest of the Roos had trouble finding the block, finishing with just three total blocks.
"We hadn't really played a team that hits like that yet," Lukes said. "But we will see more teams like that, so we just have to work on it."
Despite a tough second set, which saw 13 ties and four lead changes, the other two sets combined saw just seven ties and three lead changes. Kansas City hit for just .124 as a team, and allowed South Dakota to attack at a .346 clip.
The Roos will finish out KC Roos Klassic play tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. as they take on Tulsa, who also went 1-1 on Friday, falling to South Dakota and defeating Louisiana Tech.
