Harrington Moves to 10th on All-Time Kills List in Loss
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - In what was effectively the second place matchup for the 2019 KC Roos Klassic, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane defeated the Kansas City Roos, dropping KC to 1-3 on the season. The Roos have not defeated Tulsa since October of 2001, and Saturday was no different as the Golden Hurricane outsized and outmuscled the Roos, 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-16, 25-21).
It seemed the Roos were playing from behind all day, as they allowed Tulsa to jump out to a 20-12 lead in the first set. Melanie Brecka threw down three kills and Mikala Wells added two of her own to help bring Kansas City back into the set, but it was not enough as the Golden Hurricane escaped with the set.
Fortunes seemed like they may have turned in the second set for the Roos, as a kill by Brecka gave them a 3-2 lead in the early going, and they never looked back taking the set 25-17. Kansas City held Tulsa to a .000 hitting percentage in the second set, defending the net with four blocks.
Things reverted in sets three and four, however, as the Roos never led in the third set and allowed Tulsa to hit .265 in the fourth. The Golden Hurricane were led by Dilaria Gedikoglu in the attack, who finished with 17 kills. Kansas City's attack was spread fairly evenly, led by Wells with 11 kills, Brecka with 10 and Mykal Sadler with eight. Sadler added two solo blocks and four block assists to help the Roos defensively.
