PEORIA, ILL. - Coming off a strong Friday night showing against Jacksonville State, Kansas City (1-8) couldn't keep the good times rolling, losing to Bradley (5-4) in straight sets. The Roos were overwhelmed by the Braves, dropping all three sets by a seven point margin or more. Kansas City concludes the Bradley Family Weekend Tournament going 1-2 with a 3-1 win over the Gamecocks and 3-0 defeats to Bradley and Central Michigan.Â
Set one started off in the hands of the hosting Braves as Bradley notched the first three points of the match. The Roos responded well by tying it up and 5-5 thanks to back to back service aces by Ledisi Kpea then Megan Lawson. Bradley followed that up with a 8-2 run, extending their lead out to six and growing it out to eight by the final serve of the first set.Â
Kansas City struck first on the scoreboard with Ryanne Wattree continuing her stellar play on a pretty looking kill to put KC up 1-0 in the second set. Bradley got out to a sizable advantage after a 7-2 run and didn't look back for the rest of the set. The Roos remained behind by three to five points for the rest of the set but registered the match high in points with 18 for the second frame.Â
The Roos continued to play competitively, mounting a comeback from an early eight point deficit that was cut down to two points at its closest, 15-13 at the midway point of the final set. A few attack errors by the Roos set Bradley up on a 10-4 run to close out the third set 25-17 and take the match via a sweep.Â
As a team, the Roos were outscored 52-75 in points, 23-37 in kills, 50-59 in digs and committed five more attack errors than the Braves for the match. The Roos and Braves were equal in reception and service errors and both squads committed a dozen combined across both categories. Lawson delivered five aces, four of which came in the first set. Even more impressive, the freshman had a stretch where she knocked down three aces consecutively.Â
Wattree and Nyle Mathis both had eight kills apiece, tying for the spot as team leader in kills for the match. Wattree's eight kills came off 18 total attacks, giving her a solid .389 hitting percentage for the contest. Alaina Larson led the team in digs with 13 while Lyla Jones posted 11 herself. For Larson, it was her third match of the season cracking the double figure digs marker and the fourth time this season for Jones.Â
Kansas City looks to keep growing in their home opener against Western Illinois at 6 p.m. on Tuesday from the Swinney Center.
