KANSAS CITY - Kansas City (2-8) dropped its first two matches in the Kangaroo Klassic today, first falling to Lindenwood (5-5) in straight set fashion 3-0, (25-14, 26-24, 25-21) before a 3-1 loss to Montana (24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20).Â
SET-BY-SET VS. LINDENWOODÂ | HIGHLIGHTS
- SET ONE / 14-25 | Following a pair of opening points by the Roos, Lindenwood answered with a six point run to put Kansas City behind the eight ball for the remainder of the opening set. Capitalizing off unforced Kansas City mistakes, the Lions capitalized by staying in control from an aggressive offensive attack powered by 16 first set kills. The Roos were unable to dig themselves out of a near double digit point deficit for the majority of the set.Â
- SET TWO / 24-26 | Kansas City got off to a strong second set start thanks to an early three point run capped off by a kill from Kailee Deffebaugh, the Roos third highest leader in kills with five for the match. As the set carried on, the Roos stayed in control with a more aggressive offensive attack led by Kaia Dunford who gave the Roos a 19-13 lead with one of her seven team high kills. In the final stages of the second set, Lindenwood struck back with a 13-5 run, including four straight points when the Roos had them down to set point.Â
- SET THREE / 21-25 | The Roos started off on the wrong foot in the third set, trailing the Lions 5-9 after multiple kills from Lindenwood's Rebecca Janke. Later on into the final set, Deffebaugh and Dunford combined for an epic block that gave the Roos their first lead of the set 18-17 since it was 2-1. From there, the Roos and Lions traded points back and forth until Lindenwood scored four straight points to close the match.Â
SET BY SET VS. MONTANA | HIGHLIGHTS
- SET ONE / 26-24 | The Grizzlies jumped out to a 9-4 lead early in the first set, but the Roos got back-to-back points on a kill by Sila Ozyurek and an ace by Coco Buschhorn. Montana used a spurt to claim a 19-12 lead, but kills from Nyle Mathis, Ledisi Kpea and Dunford carried KC to a 7-1 run. The Roos had a pair of set point opportunities, and were able to clinch the set on a block by Kpea and Ozyurek.
- SET TWO / 22-25 | The second set began as a back-and-forth affair, with another Kpea/Ozyurek block tying things up 8-8 in the midst of a five-point KC run. A kill by Dunford took the Roos into the media timeout ahead, 15-12, but Montana came out of the break swinging and quickly tied it up at 16. The Grizzlies ended the set on a 9-6 run, tying things up.
- SET THREE / 19-25 | The Roos jumped out to an early 7-2 lead on the serve off Leah Green, but it did not take long for Montana to tie things up at 8. A 7-3 run gave the Grizzlies the lead for good and allowed them to take a 2-1 lead.Â
- SET FOUR / 20-25 | Montana took a 10-7 lead early, but back-to-back kills from Kpea and Deffebaugh brought the Roos within one. KC continued to battle, eventually taking a lead, 14-13, and trading points with the Griz until the score was 19-19. Montana closed the set on a 6-1 run and clinched the match.
