11/13/2023 5:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Kansas City will take on the Bears tomorrow at 9 p.m. before traveling to CSU on Friday
Starting Five
- Kansas City Men's Basketball has its first road test of the season this week, traveling to No. 15 Baylor before a meeting at Colorado State. Across the past 10 seasons, the Roos are 1-9 in road openers, eight of which have been played against Power Five opponents. The lone win came in 2014-15, when the Roos took down Missouri, 69-61.
- Defense has been the name of the game for Kansas City in its first two wins to open up the season. The Roos are allowing just 45.0 points per game and 30.1% field goal shooting and are forcing 25.0 turnovers per game, all marks which rank first in the Summit and top-ten in Division One.
- Jamar Brown has shown his value as a do-it-all player in his first two games in the Roo blue and gold. He led the team's scoring efforts in both games, averaging 17.0 points on 60.0% field goal shooting. In addition, he is averaging 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
- After struggling to shoot from three-point range in the season-opening win over Avila, the Roos were more decisive with their long-range shooting against St. Mary. Kansas City ended the game with the same amount of three-point makes (8) in both games, but shot at a 42.1% clip against the Spires.
- Kansas City will enter the Baylor contest looking for its first win against a Power Five opponent since taking down Missouri, 80-66, on Nov. 15, 2021. The Roos will also be looking for their first-ever win against a Top-25 team. Currently 0-25 against ranked opponents, the closest call came in a 52-44 loss to No. 25 Kansas State on Dec. 29, 2012.
Baylor Notes
- Baylor enters the 2023-24 season fresh off a Second Round appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season.
- The Bears are 3-0 to begin the year, picking up wins over Auburn, John Brown and Gardner-Webb.
- Kansas City holds a 4-3 edge in the all-time series between the two teams, but they have not met since 1998-99 season.
- In Waco, the Bears are 3-0 against the Roos. The last time KC played on the Bears' home court was Dec. 3, 1996, a 79-71 overtime loss.
- Through three games, Baylor has five double-digit scorers, led by Ja'Kobe Walter's 16.3 points per game average. Walter was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Nov. 13.
- The Bears average 5.7 blocks per game, which ranks 49th among all Division One teams.
Colorado State Notes
- Colorado State enters 2023-24 after going 15-18 last season, including an eighth-place finish in the Mountain West.
- The Rams seem set to elevate their level of play this season, opening the year with a pair of wins over Louisiana Tech and Wright State.
- Currently ranked T9 in the Mid-Major Madness 'The Other Top 25,' CSU was selected for a fifth-place finish in the Mountain West Preseason Poll.
- This will be the first-ever meeting between the Roos and the Rams.
- Through two games, Isaiah Stevens leads CSU with 18.5 points per game. He is followed closely by Nique Clifford and Joel Scott, both at 17.5 ppg.
