KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Just a sophomore, Rylan Childers made sure her effort today would be appreciated by the senior class. On a day that saw eight outgoing players honored on Senior Day in a pre-game ceremony, the Kansas City Women's Soccer All-American collected her league-leading seventh goal of the year sending the Roos to a 1-0 victory this afternoon against South Dakota (5-6-0). Kansas City finishes it's non-conference portion of the season with an 8-1-2 record.
"We have such a solid group of seniors both on-and-off the field," said Childers. "Being able to come out and celebrate them and play with them all in the starting lineup today was really encouraging for us as a team. We are definitely going to miss them when they leave us in the near future."
Childers took a beautiful pass off a set piece from senior Abby Small and headed the ball into the bottom right spot of the net in the 36th minute. The marker was the culmination of offensive pressure the Roos put on the South Dakota defense all afternoon. In the first half alone, Kansas City popped in nine shots, including six on the net, and finished with 16 on the day.
Kansas City's offense was strengthened with the return of freshman forward Lindsey Prokop. She returned from an ankle injury that kept her out of last weekend's games and she tallied 58 minutes today.
Starting in her fourth-straight game, goalkeeper Erin Roth finished the day with four saves to improve to 5-1-1 overall.
The loss for the Coyotes snaps a four-match win streak.
