KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Returning to Durwood Stadium to begin conference play, the Kansas City Women's Soccer team tied 1-1 against University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (6-3-2) in a nail biter to the end, starting the conference season with a 8-1-3 record. Splitting possession an even 50 percent in the first half, both teams came out to play.
The Vaqueros struck first in the 17th minute, off a laser goal from forward Shentatious Knox. The intensity maintained, but the Roos caught a break in the 39th minute during a corner kick when forward Amanda Sampson painted a beautiful corner right to defender Emma Wilson, who in turn flicked the ball behind herself for the goal.Â
The first half stayed tied at one for the remainder of play. Coming back out on the pitch for the second half, both teams kept the pace set in the first. So much so, neither team managed a goal. The Vaqueros notched six shots in the half, two saved by Roos goal keeper Erin Roth. The Roos kept up, sending four of their own shots, yet the clock hit 90 minutes, and the game went to overtime.
The Roos had a handful of chances to score the game winner in double overtime, but strong play from Vaqueros goal keeper Kinga Szemik ended the game in a tie.
"It's tough to get a draw at home," said head coach Chris Cissell. "Credit to UTRGV to be able to come on the road in the first conference game and get a draw. We worked hard, battled, had lots of good chances. Fell down 1-0 and then came back to tie it. But we just couldn't find that game-winning goal. Now we just have to focus on moving on and now we have Seattle on Sunday."
The Roos continue conference play on Sunday, Oct. 6 at Durwood Stadium against Seattle U at 1 p.m.Â
