Roos Will Look for Season Sweeps Against Utah Valley, Seattle U
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City volleyball team prepares for its final home matches of the 2019 season, facing two opponents that took them to five sets earlier in the year.
Overview
- Kansas City defeated both Chicago State and California Baptist in its last two matches, moving them to 13-11 on the season, and 9-3 in Western Athletic Conference play. The wins gave the Roos season sweeps over both opponents.
- Alicia Harrington errupted for 40 kills (5.7 kps) in the last two matches. She swung for 16 kills on .406 hitting against Chicago State, which earned her the title of WAC Offensive Player of the Week, the second of her career. Against California Baptist, she tied a career-high with 24 kills on .308 hitting.
- Alli Schomers set a career-high by dishing out 54 assists against California Baptist, besting her previous high of 53 set against Valpo earlier this season. Schomers has surpassed the 50 assist mark five times this season, and averages a WAC-best 10.08 assists per set.
- Melanie Brecka was next to unstoppable last week, hitting for a .444 average against the Cougars and Lancers. She placed a season-high 18 kills against California Baptist.
- The Roos stand in third place in the WAC with just four regular season matches remaining. They will be pitted against three teams that they beat during the first round of conference play before closing the regular season with a rematch against conference-leading New Mexico State, who bested KC 3-1 the first time around.
Utah Valley
- The Roos met with the Wolverines first on October 10, a five-set victory for Kansas City. The win brought the Roos to 6-8 all-time against Utah Valley.Â
- Alicia Harrington had her first 20-kill match of the season in these teams first meeting, placing 22 kills on 56 attacks. Harrington has since eclipsed the 20-kill mark twice.
- Alli Schomers nearly notched a triple-double against the Wolverines the in the Oct. 10 matchup, statting 52 assists, 10 digs and a career-high nine kills. Schomers currently leads the team with eight double-doubles, including two straight.
- Utah Valley ranks second in the WAC with 2.46 blocks per set, trailing only New Mexico State. They blocked away 13 total Kansas City attacks on Oct. 10.
Seattle U
- Kansas City followed up its five-set victory against Utah Valley with another five-set win against Seattle U on Oct. 12. The victory moved Kansas City to 10-6 against the Redhawks all-time.
- Harrington played well against the Redhawks, reaching 20 kills exactly. She did so on .224 hitting and added 14 digs. She has also has eight double-doubles, a tie with Schomers for the team lead.
- The Roos served at a high rate in the first meeting between these two teams, sending across seven aces. Kansas City ranks second in the WAC, averaging 1.5 aces per set.
- The Redhawks' Tijana Milojivic stands as one of the best back line defensive players in the conference, averaging a team-high 4.07 digs per set. This ranks sixth among all WAC players.
