CHICAGO, Ill. -- Kansas City sophomore midfielder Rylan Childers established a new school assists record as the Roos continued their dominance against Chicago State (0-19, 0-8 WAC) in a 5-1 victory this afternoon. Childers, the Preseason WAC Player of the Year, notched four points and freshman sensation Lindsey Prokop scored two goals and added a pair of helpers for a Kansas City offense streaking at the right time. The victory closes out the 2019 regular season with a 12-3-4 mark, extends the team's win streak at four-straight games and gives the Roos the No. 3 seed in the conference standings. During the four-game win streak, Kansas City holds a 9-1 scoring edge.
The Roos will now head to the WAC tournament as the third seed and face the No. 6 seed on Nov. 6 at 9 p.m. CT, with the event hosted by Seattle U. The opponent of the Roos will be announced officially by the conference office early Sunday. There are four more games in the conference to be played later tonight.
"I am extremely proud of the team... today was tough with the weather elements and the travel," said head coach Chris Cissell who notched his 101st win at Kansas City. "We persevered and got the result that we wanted and needed. We were disappointed to not get the shutout, but overall we fell really good about the way we are playing right now and I feel like we are peaking at the right time of the season!
"I want to congratulate Rylan (Childers) for setting the all-time assist record in just her second year of playing as a Roo, breaking her older sister's record set last year! I am super proud she is a part of the Kansas City family and excited for her future here. We will now focus as a team on resting and recovery and then we will be ready to head to Seattle for the WAC tournament."
Childers got the scoring party started in the 18th minute taking a pass from Prokop and burying the ball in the net for a quick 1-0 Kansas City lead. Amanda Sampson staked the Roos to a 2-0 lead heading into the half with her marker in the 33rd minute.
The Roos salted the game away early in the second half starting with a goal from Liz Mann in the 52nd minute. Then, Prokop added her sixth and seventh goals in the span of five minutes. At that point, coach Cissell removed the starters from the game to rest them up for the conference tournament.
Chicago State got a goal from Barbara Castellanos in the 89th minute to prevent the shutout.
Childers now stands with 23 career assists, which is one more than her sister Rylan compiled in her four-year career from 2015-18.
Kansas City is now 8-0-0 all-time against Chicago State out-scoring the Cougars by a 64-1 advantage.
