KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Women's Soccer (8-1-4, 0-0-2 WAC) snapped a three-game skid against Seattle U (5-6-2, 1-0-1 WAC) as the teams were forced to end in a 1-1 double overtime draw this afternoon from Durwood Soccer Stadium. Sophomore All-American midfielder Rylan Childers tied the score with one minute, 24 seconds remaining in the game to force overtime and eventually the tie.
The game played out like expected between two Western Athletic Conference (WAC) heavyweights. One of these two teams have claimed the WAC championship in each of the past six years, with the Roos winning the last two titles.
In the early going, both offenses were controlled by the countering defenses. In fact, the first shot on goal for the Roos occurred in the 24th minute off the foot of Rylan Childers. Seattle U didn't fare much better on the offensive end, posting five overall shots in the first 45 minutes.
The first half ended scoreless.
"The girls battled so hard," said head coach Chris Cissell. "We showed a warrior mentality against a really good Seattle U program. To come from behind again and get a tie with one minute left, we feel like we left it all out there. Our entire back line played 110 minutes Friday night and 110 minutes today and only allowed two goals combined against two really good opponents. I'm really proud of the effort of these girls."
Monique Nagel notched her first season goal for the Redhawks staking the visitor's to a 1-0 lead in the 76th minute. She broke free from the Roo defense and tipped a ball with her right foot into the net.
The game was physical all afternoon long, with both teams making skilled defensive plays and grinding out possessions. The teams combined for 44 total fouls on the afternoon.
In the midst of the physical play, Childers displayed her offensive skills late in the contest. She took a free kick outside the top of the box beating Seattle U goalkeeper Madison Waguespack in the 89th minute to tie the game up at 1 apiece. Childer's laser went over a wall of Redhawk defenders lined up 10 yards away and found the top right corner of the goal for her eight marker of the season.
Both teams offensive opportunities in the overtime sessions were negated once again by solid defense.
Senior goalkeeper Erin Roth finished with three saves in all 110 minutes of play.
