Brecka's Big Night Gives the Roos Three Sweeps in Four WAC Matches
The Kansas City volleyball team returned to its dominance over WAC opponents following Monday's slip up against Grand Canyon, battling past Chicago State, 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-21). The Roos used a big performance from Melanie Brecka to push past the Cougars, as she threw down a game-high 16 kills on .316 hitting, giving her 11 matches with double digit kills this year.
"A hard fought win on the road is never something to take for granted," Head Coach Christi Posey said. "It wasn't our most efficient performance, but we battled."
The first set gave neither team momentum. The Roos built a 13-9 lead in the early going, which proved to be their largest lead of the set. The Cougars fought back to tie the score at 13-13, and from there both squads traded punches. A Kelsie Milkowski kill gave the Roos a 24-22 lead, but Chicago State battled off two straight set points to force a long set. Back-to-back hitting errors by the Cougars' Nailah Jones gave Kansas City the set, with Melanie Brecka and Alicia Harrington poising themselves for big games with six and five kills, respectively.
Kansas City hit hard to begin the second set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead fueled by Harrington and Brecka. Streaky play cost the Roos, however, as they gave the Cougars an 8-2 run and allowed them back in the set.
Eventually the Alli Schomers to Brecka connection became too much for Chicago State, and KC pulled away with the second set victory.
Ty Lukes came up big in the block in the third set, ending the match with seven total blocks, including four in the third set alone. Her seven block performance is the first for the Roos since November of last year, when Emma Dyer came up with seven against CSUB.
Schomers continued streaking in the passing game, finishing with 33 assists. She has now finished seven-straight matches with at least 30 assists, a first for Kansas City since 2016, when Kaylyn Brandt did it in 10-straight matches.
The victory gives Kansas City its 40th win all-time against Chicago State in just 45 attempts. Dating back to 2004, the Roos have defeated the Cougars in 18 of the last 19 meetings.
Kansas City remains on the road going into next week, as they prepare to travel to Orem, Utah for a matchup with Utah Valley on Thursday, and then to Seattle, Washington on Saturday to take on Seattle U.
