KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC volleyball posted a 1-1 record on the first day of the Kangaroo Klassic, the home-opening tournament hosted by the 'Roos in 2016, sweeping Cornell 3-0 early in the day before falling to Northern Iowa 3-1 at Swinney Recreation Center on Friday night. Senior Kaylyn Brandt (Sumner, Iowa) put up her third and fourth double-doubles of the season, racking up 39 assists and 11 digs against Cornell, and going for 38 and 10 against UNI.
UMKC (6-3) started the day by falling behind to Cornell 6-3 in the opening set, but settled in on its home court to rattle off five-straight points that included two kills from freshman Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa). From that point on, UMKC controlled the match, taking set one with ease, 25-14.
Cornell put up more of a fight in the next two sets, but UMKC's offensive efficiency was too much for the Big Red to handle, and the 'Roos won the final two sets 25-21 and 25-22, respectively.
UMKC hit .407 as a team in its opening match, led by the offensive trio of junior Devan Porter (Bettendorf, Iowa), senior Madison Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Harrington. Porter notched a team-high 14 kills, while Mosier paced the team with a .733 hitting efficiency tallying 11 kills, and Harrington added 11 kills of her own to aid the UMKC attack. Freshman Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) also helped the 'Roos in a major way, notching three service aces.
Despite holding the high-powered UNI offense to just a .273 hitting efficiency, UMKC was unable to get much going on the attacking end, hitting just .179 as a team and totaling 19 attacking errors on the night.
After falling behind 2-0, UMKC pushed through in set three to show toughness, clawing their way to a 25-22 victory, but UNI was too much to handle on Friday, and the 'Roos fell in set four 25-16.
Along with Brandt's second double-double of the day, Mosier racked up another 11 kills to lead UMKC, and Harrington followed close behind with 10. Senior Emma Hagedorn (Parkville, Mo.) led the 'Roos with a .278 hitting percentage.
The 'Roos finish off the Kangaroo Klassic on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they face Bradley at 1:30 p.m.
