MANHATTAN, Kan. – UMKC women's soccer fell to Kansas State, 2-0, on Friday in Manhattan, Kansas. The Roos looked poised to get their second-straight win after controlling the game the majority of the first period, but the Wildcats took hold of their home turf in the second half, scoring two goals for the win.
UMKC (3-7-2) dominated possession in the first half, and led the shot count 9-4 at the intermission, including a 4-0 lead in shots on goal. Of all of the Roos' attempts in the opening stanza, none came closer than a ninth-minute attempt from sophomore midfielder Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.). After a Kansas State (4-5-3) player committed a foul on sophomore forward Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) just outside of the 18-yard box, setting up a free kick. Childers noticed the Wildcats were slow to get into position and quickly fired a laser on the direct kick, but a great outstretched save from the K-State goalkeeper kept the Roos off the board.
Childers' shot ricocheted off the keeper's hands, and junior midfielder Nikki Lynch (Leawood, Kan.) put an attempt on goal, but a K-State defender was able to boot it away to again prevent a UMKC goal.
K-State opened the second half by putting pressure on the UMKC defense, earning a corner and taking a shot within the first three minutes of the period. The Wildcats continued the pressure, and put their first shot on goal in the 51st minute, a ball that was sent upper-90 past sophomore goalkeeper Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) to give K-State the 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats kept the pressure on the UMKC defense, forcing three-straight corner kicks following the goal, and putting up another two shots in the next eight minutes, including one on goal that was saved by Lillig.
K-State forced Lillig to make another save in the 71st minute before UMKC took their first shot of the second half in the 73rd minute. Childers was able to put another shot on goal in the 76th minute, but the Wildcat keeper tallied one of her six saves on the shot.
The Wildcats scored their second and final goal of the match in the 82nd minute, after a ball was played into the box and finished from 15 yards out.
Despite UMKC's best efforts to come back, K-State's defense held tough, keeping the Roos off the board.
K-State outshot the Roos 8-3 in the second half, including a 6-4 shots on goal advantage. Childers led UMKC with five total shots, three of which were on goal. Mothershead finished with four shots (one on goal), and freshman defender Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.) registered two shots, including one on goal. Lillig finished the night with four saves.
UMKC opens Western Athletic Conference play on Friday, Oct. 7 in Edinburg, Texas, as the Roos take on UT Rio Grande Valley. UMKC will return home for a Sunday afternoon tilt with New Mexico State on Oct. 9, with the match scheduled for 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network via WACSports.com/Watch.
