EDINBURG, Texas – UMKC women's soccer started Western Athletic Conference play with a 2-1 victory in double overtime over UT Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas, on Friday night.
Delayed an hour due to lightning, the Roos (4-7-2, 1-0-0 WAC) and Vaqueros (8-3-1, 0-1-0 WAC) started out slow, but it was UTRGV that struck first. The Vaqueros went ahead in the match on a header in the 14th minute, putting the Roos in a hole early.
The Roos continued to battle, and at the end of half had fired five shots to the Vaqueros' six, including two shots on goal, one from sophomore forward Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) and one from sophomore midfielder Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.).
Seventeen minutes into the second half, UMKC leveled the score at 1-1, thanks to junior forward Kara Priest (Overland Park, Kan.) scoring her second goal of the season on an assist from Childers. Childers took a free kick that was saved and deflected by the UTRGV goalkeeper, but wasn't settled cleanly, and the deflection bounced to Priest who then finished the work to tie the match.
For the next 28 minutes both teams fought to get the win, but 90 minutes wasn't enough to determine a winner.
It wasn't until the 108th minute that a winner would be determined. UMKC earned a corner kick and Childers sent it into the box and before it was all said-and-done, Childers was credited with the goal and UMKC came away victorious, 2-1.
“I am very proud of the team belief and competitive spirit we showed tonight,” head coach Chris Cissell said. “Coming back from behind on the road against a very good team and getting the victory was a phenomenal way to start WAC play.”
UMKC returns to Kansas City to face New Mexico State on Sunday, Oct. 9. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Durwood Stadium.
