VERMILLION, S.D. – Late-game heroics from sophomore MF Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) capped off what turned out to be a dominating performance from the UMKC women's soccer team in its victory over South Dakota on Sunday afternoon.
Off an assist coming from junior MF Sydni Young (O'Fallon, Mo.), the game-winning goal scored by Childers with 10 minutes to play, gave the 'Roos a 2-1 advantage to improve their record to 2-5-2 on the season.
“This was a really big game for us to win,” UMKC head coach Chris Cissell said. “We controlled the game in just about all aspects today and I'm really glad we were able to show it on the scoreboard.”
Despite being held to just two goals, UMKC controlled the ball and set the pace for much of the game, finishing the match with 15 shots, including 11 shots on goal, and eight corner kicks.
The 'Roos came out strong in the opening half when F Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) recorded the game's first goal, which was ripped to the upper-left corner, 25 yards out. It was the sophomore's team-leading third goal of the season that came off of an assist from freshman D Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.).
Holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, the 'Roos continued to show their aggression against the Coyotes (1-8-1) as UMKC led South Dakota in nearly every statistical category, heading into the second half.
After a goal scored by South Dakota in the opening minute of the second period to tie the game at one a piece, Young fired a cross from the right side and found Childers who knocked in the winning goal and give UMKC the victory.
In just the second start of her collegiate career, freshman goalkeeper Erin Roth (Eureka, Mo.) was able to extended her undefeated record to 2-0-0, saving two goals out of three shots that came her way.
Up next for UMKC, the 'Roos will come back to Kansas City for a home matchup versus Drake on Wednesday and is schedule to kick-off at 7 p.m.
