KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC (2-6-2) women's soccer controlled possession throughout Wednesday's match vs. Drake (8-1-1), but two late goals gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory at Durwood Stadium. The 'Roos outshot Drake 13-8 overall and 8-6 in shots on goal.
With four shots on goal through the first 15 minutes of play, UMKC continued its steady effort throughout the entire opening period. The teams went to the locker room at half in a scoreless tie, with the 'Roos outshooting the Bulldogs 7-1 overall and 5-0 in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.
UMKC kept up its consistent ball control in the second half and took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute of play when D Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.) scored her first career goal following a cross from D Niekie Pellens (Naarden, Netherlands). For Pellens, it was her first assist of the season.
Drake evened the score in the 81st minute on a free kick by Kasey Hurt. The Bulldogs added the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute when Alyssa Brand scored on a header that was assisted by Annie Schmitz.
F Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) finished with a game-high four shots. F Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.), MF/F Kara Priest (Overland Park, Kan.) and D Emily Talmon (Papillion, Neb.) each recorded multiple shots.
GK Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) finished with four saves. Drake GK Brooke Dennis earned the victory after playing the second half and making two saves. GK Haley Morris made five saves in the first half for the Bulldogs.
UMKC will continue its home stand with a 1 p.m. CT matchup vs. Oral Roberts on Sunday.
