KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In front of a loud and passionate home crowd, UMKC volleyball posted a four-set win over Seattle U on Saturday, winning 27-25, 16-25, 25-22, 27-25.
Things looked bleak for UMKC (13-10, 6-4 WAC) in the first set, falling behind 17-10 to the Redhawks (12-12, 5-6 WAC). The Roos didn't give in, and went on a 14-7 rally to tie the match up at 24, and go on to win 27-25. Junior Devan Porter (Bettendorf, Iowa) led the Roos in the set with six kills on a .214 hitting percentage, and freshman Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) contributed to the Roos' success with two block assists and one kill.
Physically and mentally drained from the spectacular comeback, UMKC let the second set slip and Seattle won 25-16 to even the match at 1-1. The Roos used the intermission between the second and third sets to regain their breath and composure, and came out guns blazing in the third set. UMKC never trailed in the set and went on to win 25-22 to take the 2-0 lead. Senior Madison Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) tallied five kills in the set and hit an impressive .714 on seven total attacks, and picked up a dig and block assist to lead the way for the Roos. Porter contributed to the win with four kills of her own in the set.
Mosier and fellow senior Emma Hagedorn (Parkville, Mo.) willed the Roos to the win in the fourth set, each tallying six kills. Hagedorn hit .750 in the set and Mosier recorded a .667 hitting efficiency, and the two each contributed with one block assist. The set went back-and-forth the entire way, and Seattle U was on the brink of the win taking a 25-24 lead, but a kill from Hagedorn even things up, and the UMKC defense forced two attacking errors by the Redhawks to win the set and match.
Mosier led the team with 17 kills on the day, while Porter and Hagedorn recorded 12 and 10, respectively. Sadler led the team with six block assists, Mosier added five, and Hagedorn tabbed three. Senior Brianna Starr (Blue Springs, Mo.) tallied 16 digs and Adasia Bromberger (Omaha, Neb.) notched 11 in the win. Senior Kaylyn Brandt (Sumner, Iowa) amassed 50 assists and aided the UMKC efforts with three service aces.
UMKC is back in action on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. CT, when they face Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Arizona. The Roos will follow that match up with a Saturday afternoon tilt with CSU Bakersfield in Bakersfield, California.
