SEATTLE, Wash. – In a clash of the top two teams in the Western Athletic Conference standings, UMKC women's soccer fell to top-ranked Seattle U on the road, 3-1.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Roos (5-8-4, 2-1-2 WAC) get outshot by the Redhawks (10-5-1, 5-0-0 WAC) 9-4, four goals were scored in the final 30 minutes of action.
The goal scoring action started in the 60th minute, on a free kick after sophomore defender Emily Talmon (Papillion, Neb.) was given a straight red card. The free kick deflected off the UMKC wall and found the back of the net to give the Redhawks the 1-0 lead.
Seattle took advantage of UMKC playing a player short, and scored its second goal of the night in the 75th minute. Moments later in the 77th minute, the Redhawks took a 3-0 lead, but the Roos answered right back, with junior Lilly Cobb (Glen Carbon, Ill.) scoring her third goal in two games just seconds later, bringing UMKC back within two.
The Roos continued to fight, but were unable to overcome the two goal deficit and fell to the Redhawks, 3-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) finished the night with eight saves. Cobb and sophomore forward Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) led the Roos with two shots each. Junior Kara Priest (Overland Park, Kan.) and freshman Claire Larson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) each tallied a shot to give UMKC a total of six on the night.
UMKC looks to rebound at Utah Valley on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Roos and Wolverines will square off in Orem, Utah, at 8 p.m. CT on the WAC Digital Network.
