OREM, Utah – UMKC women's soccer was unable to overcome a three-goal first half against Utah Valley on Saturday night. The Roos battled back to score two goals in the second half, but the Wolverine offense was too much to handle as UMKC fell, 6-2 in Orem, Utah.
Utah Valley (9-6-2, 3-2-1 WAC) opened the match with a quick goal, scoring in the second minute. The Wolverines never let off the pedal, and scored two more goals in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the half.
The Roos (5-9-4, 2-2-2 WAC) answered in the second half with a goal in the 63rd minute from senior Emily Herndon (Overland Park, Kan.), off an assist from senior Niekie Pellens (Naarden, Netherlands).
The UVU lead was extended back to three in the 77th minute, after Pellens attempted to clear a ball in the box and put it in the wrong net for an own goal.
Pellens made up for the own goal with an 80th-minute goal, making the score 4-2. From 25 yards out, Pellens fired a strike that sailed over the keeper's head into the upper right corner of the net.
UMKC's two goals weren't enough to overcome the high-powered UVU offense, and the Wolverines would go on to score two more goals to top the Roos 6-2.
UMKC is back in action on Oct. 29 to close the regular season with senior day at home against Chicago State. Kickoff against the Cougars is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
