Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC women's soccer team hosted South Dakota on Sunday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field. The Kangaroos played the Coyotes to a 1-1 tie, despite two overtime periods. UMKC forced the overtime periods after a late goal by Zaina Mayer off of a free kick by Ariel Rank.
The pair had a very uneventful first 45 minutes, with the first half resulting in a 0-0 tie.
The Coyotes pounced on the Kangaroos in the second half, putting lots of pressure on the home team's defensive end. In the 70th minute, Erin Bello sent a long ball over the UMKC defense and connected with Katie Quinones who slotted the ball past Jami Finnell.
As time appeared to be running out for UMKC, an opportunity presented itself following a South Dakota foul. With less than a minute remaining, Rank ran up from her defensive position to take the free kick. The sophomore placed the ball just above the six yard box and in a cluster of players connected with Mayer's head to tie the game in the 89th minute. The goal was Mayer's third of the season.
Neither team gave up anything in the overtime periods, resulting in the Kangaroos' first program tie.
Despite giving up one goal, Finnell had a career-high 14 saves for UMKC.
The Kangaroos are back in action on on Thurday night playing host to Drake at DSSRF beginning at 7 p.m.
