
Kangaroos Host Bulldogs On Thursday

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC women's soccer is back at Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field on Thur., Sept. 24 after playing South Dakota to a 1-1 draw on Sun., Sept. 20, despite two overtime periods. The Kangaroos host Drake out at DSSRF at 7 p.m.
UMKC is currently 0-7-1 on the season and is in search of the program's first win. For the `Roos, Zaina Mayer (3), Alyssa D'Egidio (1) and Alyson Russell (1) have all scored goals this season.
Freshman Leads The Way In First Season
Freshman Zaina Mayer is the current UMCK leader in points, goals and shots-on-goal. The midfielder has scored three goals in eight games and placed four shots on goal (.667). She leads the Kangaroos with seven points scored this season, putting her fifth in The Summit League standings. Mayer's last goal came against South Dakota, when she tied and sent the game into overtime in the 89th minute.
Finnell Named Summit League Co-Defensive Player of the Week
UMKC freshman Jami Finnell has been named The Summit League Co-Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon by the league office. The freshman earned the honors after posting 24 saves on the week, recording a career high 14 saves in the program's first tie on Sunday to South Dakota.
Finnell also recorded 10 saves in the 1-0 loss to Missouri State on Wed., Sept. 16. For the week, the Lincoln, Neb., native finished with a .923 save percentage. Finnell has started and played in all eight games on the season, recording 63 saves.
Finnell is the first UMKC women's soccer player to earn league player of the week honors for the program in its inaugural season. She shared the honors with Abbey Stratton from North Dakota State.
Kangaroos In The Summit League
Jami Finnell is on top The Summit League standings in saves. The freshman goalkeeper has recorded 63 saves headed into the game with Drake. Finnell also ranks first in saves per game with 7.88.

The Bulldogs are 3-3-3 entering into DSSRF and are led by Elizabeth Woerle. Woerle has scored three goals and recorded one assist for seven points on the season. She has started in all nine games so far this season and two of her goals were game winning goals. In the net for Drake has been Kourtney Arnold and she has tallied 51 saves. Arnold has recorded four shutouts and given up just 10 goals.
Drake's wins this season have come against North Dakota State, South Dakota and Western Illinois. The Bulldogs are coming off of a 0-0 double overtime tie to Iowa State.

UMKC Gets First Program Tie Against South Dakota, 1-1
The UMKC women's soccer team hosted South Dakota on Sunday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field. The Kangaroos played the Coyotes to a 1-1 tie, despite two overtime periods. UMKC forced the overtime periods after a late goal by Zaina Mayer off of a free kick by Ariel Rank.
The pair had a very uneventful first 45 minutes, with the first half resulting in a 0-0 tie.
The Coyotes pounced on the Kangaroos in the second half, putting lots of pressure on the home team's defensive end. In the 70th minute, Erin Bello sent a long ball over the UMKC defense and connected with Katie Quinones who slotted the ball past Jami Finnell.
As time appeared to be running out for UMKC, an opportunity presented itself following a South Dakota foul. With less than a minute remaining, Rank ran up from her defensive position to take the free kick. The sophomore placed the ball just above the six yard box and in a cluster of players connected with Mayer's head to tie the game in the 89th minute. The goal was Mayer's third of the season.
Neither team gave up anything in the overtime periods, resulting in the Kangaroos' first program tie.
Despite giving up one goal, Finnell had a career-high 14 saves for UMKC.
