Kansas City, Mo. -- In the finale between IUPUI and UMKC, a first-pitch grand slam put a totally different complexion on the game as the Kangaroos sent their seniors out in style with the first senior day series win in program history with a 4-0 triumph over IUPUI.
It was a defensive battle through the first three innings, as each side was only able to muster one baserunner - UMKC in the bottom of the first with a Monica Canisales double and IUPUI with a walk in the top of the second.
UMKC threatened in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with a two-out walk granted to Lauren Cross and singles by Carli Slagle and Samantha Hurst. Julie Hartung made quick work of the juiced bags, sending the first pitch of her at-bat deep to right field. Megan Ussary couldn't prolong the scoring, however, as her two-strike foul tip was caught.
The Jaguars led off the fifth inning with a single up the middle, pushing the runner into scoring position, but the Kangaroo defense kept the visitors off the scoreboard. IUPUI was also able to put one runner aboard in the sixth and three in the seventh, but Taya Upkes and the Kangaroo defense worked out of the jam.
Samantha Hurst picked up her fifth win on the season, striking out five in 5.0 innings of work.
The Kangaroos (8-24, 6-11 Summit) wrap up their home schedule on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Kansas in a scheduled doubleheader. The first game is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
