Kansas City, Mo. -- Megan Ussary moved to the top of the Kangaroo stat sheet, collecting two doubles in the first game of the doubleheader, but UMKC couldn't hang on for the win in either contest, falling in both games to Kansas.
UMKC found itself down a run in the bottom of the first, but Ashley Whiteside drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the frame, advancing to third on an Ussary double. Alicia Baker put a great bunt down to the Jayhawk pitcher, with Whiteside sliding under the tag to score. Lauren Cross hit a sharp grounder to second to plate Ussary, but UMKC couldn't push another run across.
Kansas re-took the lead in the top of the third, pushing four runs across in the frame. The visitors broke the game open in the sixth, adding five runs for a 10-2 edge.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cross belted a double to right field with one out, with Carli Slagle drawing a walk. Ashton Kistler looped a shot into shallow center, but after being kept close to second, Cross wasn't able to beat the throw to third. Ashley Kinn's grounder to short brought the game to an end.
Kansas also got on the board early in the second game, as Stevie Crisosto led off the game with a home run, with the Jayhawks adding two more in the third.
The Kangaroos hung on for the next three innings, but were unable to manufacture a run, with Kansas adding four runs in the top of the seventh to pick up the 7-0 win.
Baker took the loss in the first game for UMKC, with Samantha Hurst getting charged with the loss in the nightcap. The Kangaroos (8-26) return to action in The Summit League this weekend, taking on South Dakota State in a three-game series. The first game of the set is slated for a 3 p.m. start from Brookings, S.D.
