Kansas City, Mo. -- Carli Slagle hit her first career home run in the fourth inning for UMKC, but it wouldn't be enough to spark a rally as the Kangaroos fell to Centenary 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Ladies got on the board early, scoring runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead.
After retiring Centenary in order in the top of the fourth, UMKC found an answer to the pitching of Ryan Thacker in the bottom of the inning. Alicia Baker hit a single up the middle, scoring Monica Canisales. Megan Ussary couldn't take advantage of the play, as she was called out at third.
Centenary added two in the top of the fifth, but Slagle snatched one back in the bottom of the frame for the Kangaroos with a two-out solo shot to right center.
After a Centenary run in the top of the sixth, Amanda Kinn led off with a single for UMKC. Advancing to third courtesy of a Canisales sacrifice and a passed ball, the Kangaroos couldn't take advantage of the threat as they retired on grounders to short and third.
Samantha Hurst took the loss for the Kangaroos, who fall to 2-16 on the year. UMKC is back in action on Friday, as a doubleheader kicks off a three-game league set at Southern Utah. The first game is slated for a 2 p.m. CDT start.
