Lawrence, Kan. -- In what was originally slated as the home opener for the Kangaroos, UMKC battled through two innings with Indiana State but couldn't overcome a five-run third-inning outburst from the Sycamores, falling 6-2 at KU's Arrocha Ballpark.
THe Kangaroos retired the side in order in the first, with Samantha Hurst collecting her 25th strikeout of the season, but were unable to threaten in the bottom of the frame.
Hurst tried to help her own cause in the second with a one-out double, but the Kangaroos were unable to push a run across.
In the top of the third, however, Indiana State would break the game open. Alicia Baker tried to make a diving stab on Leslie Fakes shot up the first-base line, but the ball tipped off Baker's glove and rolled to the fence to give Fakes a two-out triple. Christina Meyers hit a double to center to score fakes, with a three-run home run capping the inning.
Indiana State added one in the fifth and threatened to push farther ahead, but Taya Upkes was able to get the Kangaroos out of the inning as she struck out Reva LeDune to strand two Sycamores.
UMKC tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, as Julie Hartung singled up the middle and was plated by a Hurst triple. Hurst scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Upkes, who was safe at first as the Indiana State right fielder dropped the ball, but two straight strikeouts would get the Sycamores out of the inning without further damage.
The Kangaroos put two runners on board in the bottom of the seventh, as Megan Ussary walked and Baker singled through the right side, but Ussary was caught in a rundown between second and third to end the game.
Hurst struck out five batters in four innings, although she took the loss for the Kangaroos, while Meagan McCurdy picked up the win for Indiana State.
UMKC (2-11) opens both the home and league portions of its schedule on Friday, with a doubleheader slated for a 3 p.m. start.
