Kansas City opens season at Iowa State on Sunday at 6 PM
AMES, Iowa - The Kansas City Women's Soccer Team heads to Ames, Iowa, to take on the Iowa State Cyclones in the season opener on Sunday evening.Â
The Roos are led by Jess Smith, who enters her seventh year at the helm in Kansas City and had the first winning season of her tenure, with a 9-8-3 record and 3-3-2 in the Summit League.
Kansas City returns 13 players from last season and adds 10 newcomers, nine freshmen, and a transfer. Olivia Platt returns for her fifth year at Kansas City; last season, she scored nine goals while adding five assists and was named First-Team All-Summit League. The Roos also have Redshirt Junior Ashley Koch back after she scored six goals & tallied seven assists.Â
KC returns 56% of their goal contributions from last season, after losing Delfina Zolesio Fernandez Blanco to graduation, who contributed to 24% of the goal contributions.Â
ABOUT IOWA STATE
The Cyclones enter the season looking to bounce back after a 4-9-4 season last year. Iowa State is coached by Matt Fannon, who is entering his seventh season in Ames. They also went 1-8-2 in Big 12 play last season. Iowa State had six players named to the CSC Academic All-District Team.
SERIES HISTORY
The series is tied 1-1-0; Kansas City won the last meeting 3-1 back in 2018 at Durwood Stadium. The first meeting was the season prior in 2017, as Iowa State won 2-0.Â
