A new-look Kansas City squad picked up wins over Butler and Northern Iowa on the weekend
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Kansas City Softball (2-3) came away from opening weekend with a pair of wins, defeating Butler on opening day, 7-2, and mounting a comeback over Northern Iowa this afternoon, 6-5. Both teams that the Roos defeated finished in the top halves of their conferences last season: Butler took fifth place in the Big East and Northern Iowa took third in the Missouri Valley. Along with the wins, KC dropped a game each to Butler, Northern Iowa and Iowa State.
The Roos opened the season with a game against the Panthers, falling 6-1. KC was hampered by a five-run third inning by UNI, but Brooke Seppi got her first collegiate action in relief of Delilah Robles and impressed, giving up just one earned run and striking out two in three innings of play.
The second game of the weekend saw Kansas City show flashes of its capabilities. The Roos came up big late - they entered the sixth inning trailing by a run, but sent six runs across in the last two innings of play to pick up their first win of the season. Alyssa Droge and Robles combined to allow just two hits and two runs, led by four strikeouts from Robles. Ella Husak put together a big performance at the plate, going 2-of-4 and driving in three, while Mary Cunningham picked up two RBIs on a seventh inning single.Â
Day two of the Classic was more difficult for the Roos, falling in an early morning decision to Iowa State, 16-2. KC played Butler once again in the second game of the day, falling despite another two-hit performance from Husak.
This afternoon, KC showed grit and determination in a 6-5 win over Northern Iowa. The Roos struck first in the third inning, using an RBI single from Kim Yepez and a two-RBI triple from Grace Batdorf to take the lead. The Panthers responded in the fourth and fifth innings, homering twice to go ahead, 5-3. Kansas City needed a seventh inning rally to respond and came down to its final strike multiple times, but the Roos used a stretch of hits from Megan Johnston, Elleana Navarro, Adelyn French and Monica Franklin to bring three runs across and take the lead. After a lead off double and a walk put two runners on with no outs, Robles was able to work out of a jam and secure KC's second win of the weekend.
Husak, Johnston and Lauren Parker were the only players to start all five games for the Roos, and for good reason. Husak went 7-of-14 on the weekend with four walks and four RBIs while Johnston went 6-of-13 and scored a team-high five runs. Robles pitched 14.0 innings on the weekend to the tune of a 4.00 ERA, finishing with a team-high seven strikeouts.
Kansas City returns to action next weekend at the 901 classic in Memphis, Tenn., where the Roos will meet Southern Indiana, Evansville, Ball State, Memphis and Miami (OH).
