KANSAS CITY - Kansas City men's basketball (4-20, 1-9 Summit) led most of the way, but could not pull out an overtime decision against South Dakota (13-12, 5-5 Summit) this evening, dropping an 82-75 decision this evening. KC held the high-octane South Dakota offense to just 23 points in the first half, but the Coyotes found their stride in the second and scored 18 in the overtime period to come away with the win.
The Roos jumped out to an early lead in the first half, using the defensive presence of Babacar Mbengue and Jerome Palm to deter South Dakota inside and holding the Coyotes to 0-of-10 shooting from three-point range. After falling behind by four in the early stages, Kansas City used a 13-2 run midway through the first half to claim the lead, spurred by balanced scoring and stifling defense. KC took an eight-point lead into the break, the Roos' second-largest halftime lead this season.
Kansas City carried its momentum into the early stages of the second half, building its lead to as many as 11 points following a second chance bucket from Palm with 18 minutes remaining. The Coyotes chipped away at the lead, using a 15-4 run to tie things up with 12:50 remaining. Kansas City continued to hold the lead by a slight margin until just after the under-four media timeout, when USD took its first lead since early in the first half.Â
USD built its lead to three points with under two minutes to go, but a deep three-pointer from Karmello Branch tied things up. The teams traded 1-for-2 trips to the free throw line in the closing possessions of regulation, sending the game to overtime. The Coyotes owned the overtime period, shooting 8-of-8 from the free throw line and limiting KC to just one free throw attempt. On the game, USD outscored KC from the charity stripe, 28-9.
Chris Dockery led Kansas City's scoring efforts for the first time this season, going for 17 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting. He also added a team-high eight rebounds. CJ Evans added 16 points, Palm went for 14 and Branch tallied 11 to account for KC's double-digit scorers. Earning his first start of the season, Mbengue played a season-high 24 minutes, finishing with two points, three rebounds and a career-high five blocks. Across his last 10 appearances, Mbengue is averaging 7.9 blocks per 40 minutes.
The Roos return to action next week, traveling to Oral Roberts for a game in Tulsa on Feb. 12.
