The Roos eight honored seniors combined for 37 points and 21 rebounds
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Women's Basketball (7-21, 4-11) came up just short in a close 70-68 clash with Oral Roberts (14-13, 7-7) on Saturday afternoon. Before the game, Senior Day festivities took place on the Swinney Center floor as the Roos honored eight seniors: Funmi Amode, Jumoke Adaramoye, Carleigh Andrews, Kelby Bannerman, Zaire Harrell, Hallie Majoros, Tierra Trotter and Jamyah Winter. The group totaled 37 points and 21 rebounds with six reaching the floor against the Golden Eagles.Â
The game was tight throughout as the neither the Roos or Golden Eagles outscored each other by more than four points in any quarter. Kansas City had several distinct factors go there way, including a 18-2 edge in second chance points that was fueled by 15 offensive rebounds, nine more than ORU's total of six. The Roos also forced the Golden Eagles into 25 turnovers, the most in a Summit League game this season. KC only scored 21 points off of those turnovers while comitting 14 of their own. Additionally, Kansas City shot just over the 40% clip from the field and 27% from distance while ORU converted at a 48% rate from the floor and 42% from long range.Â
Tierra Trotter paced Kansas City with 20 points, tied for a game-high with ORU's Ari Gordon and making this the second time in the last four games that Trotter has cracked the 20 point mark. Emani Bennett finished the game with 14 points and four rebounds, scoring a dozen of her scoring total in the first half while going 5-9 from the field through the first 20 minutes. Zaire Harrell notched her second career double-double, putting up 10 points and tying her career-high of 14 rebounds on her senior day. Harrell also played in her 120th game, tying her for ninth all-time in KC program history for games played.Â
Kansas City's sense of urgency was clear from the jump as the Roos harassed Oral Roberts from the start, generating deflections and steals that turned into easy scoring opportunities on the offensive side of the floor. The Roos came away with three steals and forced eight ORU turnovers, coming away with a narrow 17-15 lead through the first 10 minutes. Harrell had six points and five rebounds while Bennett scored her first seven points in the frame. The second quarter belonged to Tierra Trotter with the graduate guard scoring seven points total in the quarter, five of which came in the last minute and helped the Roos tie the scoreboard at 35-35 heading into the locker room.Â
Following a tight first half, the second was no different. ORU started hot in the third, going on a 12-2 run to open the quarter. KC struck back thanks to a major boost from the bench as Lailah Hatcher and Hallie Majoros combined to score 10 of the Roos next 12 points. Hatcher provided several crucial buckets as the spark plug the Roos needed while Majoros nailed a catch-and-shoot three pointer that aided KC's comeback effort in the third. Kansas City found themselves down four, 55-51 entering the fourth, but the Roos didn't back down.Â
Trotter was Kansas City's go-to weapon in the fourth, scoring 11 of the Roos' 17 points in the quarter. With KC down 60-59, the Pine Bluff, Ark. native cashed a floater in the lane to elevate Kansas City into the lead, 61-60, for the first time since it was 21-20 KC at the 5:47 mark of the second quarter. Bannerman extended the lead with a putback layup before ORU hit a game-tying three pointer with just under four minutes to play. Following another Trotter go-ahead jumper to make it 65-63, Oral Roberts went on a 6-1 run that put the Golden Eagles up three at the 0:48 mark. Though Trotter connected on another shot in the paint to cut the deficit to one, a costly turnover on one of the game's final possessions put KC in dire position down the stretch and the Roos fell short with a 70-68 final.Â
The Roos conclude the 2025-26 regular season with a trip to St. Paul, Minn. where Kansas City will look to pull off the season sweep over St. Thomas at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening.Â
