Bennett posted a team-high 22 points & 16 rebounds, her eighth double-double of the season
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Kansas City Women's Basketball (7-22, 4-12) found themselves on the wrong end of a thriller, falling 73-71 to St. Thomas (15-14, 8-7) on Wednesday evening. Elauni Bennett produced her eighth double-double of the season and fifth in Summit League play, tallying a team-high 22 point and grabbing 16 rebounds while shooting 10-16 from the field in 32 minutes of action.
The Roos saw Emani Bennett and Zaire Harrell also reach double figure scoring outputs as Em. Bennett went for 15 points, two rebounds and two assists while Harrell scored 13 points and four rebounds. Kansas City shot 50% from the field for the game to the Tommies' 45% and limited UST to 20% from deep while the Roos shot 33% from behind the arc themselves. The Roos also out-rebounded St. Thomas by a pair of boards, 33-31, and hauled in four more rebounds on the defensive end.Â
Kansas City had a strong first quarter of play, getting out to a 11-8 lead with the Bennett sisters scoring nine of those first near-dozen points. KC stretched out the advantage to six, 20-14 by the end of the first thanks to another scoring flurry from the Bennett's. The second quarter shifted the focus back to the hometown Tommies as UST went on 15-7 run that spanned the majority of the frame. KC went into the halftime break down a point, 35-34.Â
The third was saw both teams in a deadlock tie, scoring 14 points each and trading baskets and opportunities at the free throw line for the entirety of the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Kansas City tied things up early on when Jamyah Winter hit a three pointer. The Roos took a lead for the first time since the second quarter when Em. Bennett scooted her way into the lane and converted a nifty layup at the tin to make it 57-55 with 6:35 to play.
The Roos maintained a narrow lead until the closing stages when a costly turnover led to a Tommies run out and go-ahead transition basket, making it 73-71 in UST's favor. A last second heave from Alyssa Febres went off the back iron and KC came up just short in a back and forth contest to wrap up the Roos regular season.Â
The Roos will await their fate for the Summit League Tournament next week. Currently sitting at 4-12, the Roos would be slotted in the seventh seed and play next Thursday in the #2 vs. #7 Summit Quarterfinals if that were to hold.Â
