Kansas City led for the majority of the game but faltered late
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Men's Basketball (4-18, 1-7 Summit) challenged Denver (10-13, 3-5 Summit) into the final moments of this evening's game, eventually dropping a 69-61 decision. Down their two leading scorers, Kasheem Grady II and Jayson Petty stepped up, leading the team with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Kansas City came out with energy, using a balanced scoring attack to grab a 13-6 lead, capped by back-to-back buckets from Trey Booker-Lowery. From there, the sides battled back and forth. Denver would close the gap, but KC always had a response. A five-point Pioneer lead was erased in the final two minutes of the first half and the teams took a 32-32 draw into the break.
Offensive rebounds proved to be a deciding factor, as Denver converted 12 offensive boards into nine points in the second half alone. Kansas City kept the game competitive, leading as late as the six minute mark, but Denver used a game-best nine-point run to claim a lead that it would not surrender.
Petty was effective on both sides of the ball, going 7-of-13 from the field for 16 points and taking away a game-high four steals. He reached double-digit scoring for the 14th time this season after failing to reach that mark in each of the three previous games. Grady II used 8-of-12 free throw shooting to score a team-high 17, leading the Roos' scoring efforts for the fourth consecutive game. He also grabbed seven rebounds, coming within one of his career-high.
The Roos' abbreviated bench provided a valuable presence, led by a season-high 21 minutes from Trey Booker-Lowery. He finished with seven points and four rebounds, both his best since the start of conference play. Babacar Mbengue blocked four shots in 10 minutes of play, the third four-plus block game by a Kansas City player this season.
KC is on the road for a nationally-televised contest this Sunday, traveling to St. Thomas for a game that will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
