Kansas City lost in straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-20) to New Mexico State
CARBONDALE, ILL. - Kansas City Volleyball (0-6) couldn't find enough answers in their final match of the Saluki Bash as the Roos lost 3-0 to New Mexico State (4-2) Saturday morning. The Roos came off back to back three set losses in day one of the Sauki Bash, falling to Eastern and Southern Illinois.Â
Out of all three matches at the Banterra Center, this one was the closest as Kansas City tied or led the Aggies in each of the three sets. The Roos gained an early 5-4 advantage over NMSU but proceeded to surrender the lead as the Aggies went on a 7-3 point run to swing the momentum and ultimately take the first set 25-21. Â
While New Mexico State got out to a 11-6 lead, the Roos struck back on a furious 11-6 point run to tie the second set at 17 all. Kansas City had five different players notch a kill in that stretch with Mia Weaver, Kailee Deffebaugh and Ledisi Kpea all notching two kills in the run. With the score tied, the Aggies pull away via a 8-1 point run to close out the second set in their favor.Â
The Roos refused to yield without a fight as KC didn't let the set three deficit get beyond three points until late in the match. Down two points, Kansas City rallied on an unanswered three point that saw kills from Weaver and fellow freshman outside hitter Emry Brown tie it at 14 and then an ace from Alaina Larson propelled the Roos into the lead 15-14. KC and NMSU exchanged points out of an Aggies timeout before New Mexico State pulled away to take the set 25-20 and the match in sweep fashion.Â
The Roos were outscored 60-41 and 44-30 in kills while committing four more attack errors than the Aggies for the match. Kpea led the group in kills with eight on 15 attacks to give her a .400 hitting percentage, the only Roos to reach above the .300 mark for the tournament. Chloe Kaminski reached the 20 dig mark giving her a new season-high while Lyla Jones earned 10 digs herself and led the team in assists with 25 for the match.Â
Kansas City's next slew of contests comes in Peoria, Ill. where the Roos will play Central Michigan at 10 a.m. and Jacksonville State at 4:30 p.m. next Friday at the Bradley Invitational.
