Kansas City Shuts Out SIUE, Picks Up First Road Victory of the Year

Marc Popow's PK save propelled the Roos to a 2-0 victory in Edwardsville
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Take advantage of opportunities. That has been a point of emphasis for Kansas City Men's Soccer (3-1-4) in recent weeks, and it proved fruitful today. The Roos were able to pounce on SIUE (1-5-0) on the road, coasting their way to a 2-0 victory.Â
HIGHLIGHTS
The first opportunity came early in the game, when the Roos were called for a foul in the box, setting up an SIUE penalty kick. Evan Howard stepped up to the spot for the Cougars and sent a blast to the left side of the goal. Marc Popow sprawled to his right, pushing the ball away for his second of three saves on the night.Â
SIUE had been aggressive in the early going and earned five corner kicks in the first 18 minutes of the game, but Popow's save flipped a switch for Kansas City and sparked dominance in the final 72. The Cougar's fifth corner of the evening was played away, and the Roos took advantage on the ensuing counter attack. Raphael Kistmann brought the ball up the left side, delaying his pace while Joackim Betina made an overlapping run. Kistmann played Betina towards the edge of the six-yard box and sent a one-time ball cutting to the middle of the field. Bryce Outman cut in front of an SIUE defender and snuck a shot by the Cougars' Noah Scheidweiler for the eventual game-winning goal.
Just 12 minutes later, another chance presented itself for the Roos. Kansas City gained possession in its defending third and Mathias Baucher quickly found Kistmann in the midfield. Kistmann sent a pass forward, creating a footrace between Jeremy Francou and a pair of SIUE defenders. Francou sped past the defense and won the ball, settling it to the turf and launching it past Scheidweiler to add to KC's lead.
The Roos were calm in possession for the rest of the game, creating opportunities and finishing the game with 13 shots, eight of which were placed on-frame. The Cougars were limited to just three shots in the second half and attempted just two corner kicks in the second frame after six in the first half.Â
Outman's goal was the first of his collegiate career, playing a career-high 84 minutes in his third-straight start. Francou maintains the team-lead with his fourth goal of the season and Kistmann's pair of assists were his first two points of the season after going for 22 in 2024. Popow played all 90 minutes between the sticks, making three saves and claiming his first-career clean sheet.
The Roos return to Durwood Soccer Stadium on Sunday, taking on Western Illinois in a 5 p.m. kickoff.
