Roos Dominant in Second-Straight Shutout Victory

A pair of first-time goal scorers reached the score sheet in the 3-0 victory
KANSAS CITY - It was apparent from the start that Kansas City Men's Soccer (4-1-4) was a class above Western Illinois (2-7), and the Roos maintained their pressure all the way through to come away with a 3-0 victory. Jeremy Francou started the scoring in the fifth minute and Shotaro Kodama finished it off in the 86th, with an Edin Clark goal sandwiched in between.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Roos struck right away, scoring on their first shot of the night. Kansas City built on the right side of the field, a theme that would continue throughout the rest of the game. Bryce Outman sent a through ball to Kevin Nkumu near the end line, sending a first touch ball to Francou for his team-leading fifth goal of the season and his second in as many games.
Kansas City's attack remained persistent, peppering seven shots toward goal in the 20 minutes following Francou's goal. The eighth shot proved fruitful, as Wade Muttit found Francou at the top of the box and drew the attention of the entire Leatherneck back line. Francou played the ball to Clark, who sent a right-footed strike into the back of the net for his first-career goal.

By the end of the first half, the Roos had attempted 12 shots and possessed the ball for over 55% of the half, limiting WIU to just one shot attempt. The story remained the same in the second half, and when Marc Popow was called into action he was ready. He laid out for a diving save on the Leathernecks' first half shot attempt and was called into action just once more in the second half, blocking away a deflected shot to secure his second-straight shutout.
Kodama closed the game in style, giving the Roos one more goal as icing on the cake. Kansas City had tested WIU's Micah Ramirez multiple times in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net until the 86th minute. Ethan Schafer looked to connect with Elie Kisoka on a cross from the right side, but Ramirez sprawled to the ground and blocked it away. Mariano Beunza was first to the deflection, ricocheting a ball off the left post and right to a ready Kodama. He poked the ball into the back of the net for his first-career goal.
The Roos return to action for the start of Summit League play next Saturday, heading to Denver for a meeting with the Pioneers.
