Heading into the Summit League Indoor Championships, Kansas City ranks as the 12th best performing school in the Midwest region on the men's side according to the track and field ranking index by USTFCCCA. The Roos have the second best men's placement in the region among teams in the Summit League behind South Dakota who ranks 11th overall. Kansas City is rated 33rd in the Midwest region on the women's side according to the same ranking index.Â
Additionally, four Roos lead the conference in their respective event, including Stephen Clunis in the 60m, Tory Lanham in the 200m, Jayden Henry in the 400m and Nahshon Houston in the long jump. KC will lean on their top sprinters and jumpers as the Roos hunt for medals and nationally qualifying 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash times in Brookings, South Dakota this weekend.Â
Roos To WatchÂ
- Tory Lanham - Lanham is the clear-cut favorite to win the men's 200-meter dash at the Summit League Indoor Championships. The sophomore sprinter boasts the conference's top 200m time at 20.93 and is the lone Summit League men's 200m runner to achieve a sub-21 second time this indoor season. Lanham has reached a sub-21.10 second time in the 200m three times this season, equaling the number of times Lanham has won the Summit League's 'Peak Performer of the Week' honor this indoor season.Â
- Stephen Clunis - Similar to Lanham in the 200m, Clunis comes into the Summit League Indoor Championships as the favorite to take home gold in the men's 60-meter dash. Clunis has bested the conference's top 60m time all season long, showcasing elite level speed by dashing a 6.66 second time at the season opening meet. Likewise, Clunis continued his dominant stretch in the 60m, running a 6.65 second time at the Tyson Invitational, making him the lone conference 60m runner to display a sub 6.70 time.Â
- Stephen Brown - One of the challengers towards Clunis and Lanham comes in the form of one of Kansas City's own. Brown has been excellent in both the 60m and the 200m this indoor season, ranking top five in the Summit League in both events. Brown ran a 60m time of 6.74 at the Washburn Open which is tied for fourth best in the conference. Furthermore, Brown darted a 200m time of 21.27 at the Missouri Invitational, giving him the second best time in the conference and in Kansas City school history.Â
- Nahshon Houston - On the field side, Houston has been a force to be reckoned all season long for the Roos, finishing in first place in the men's long jump three times this season. Houston's best mark in the long jump came in his latest outing, where the senior jumper recorded a career-best mark of 7.40 meters at the Tyson Invitational. The mark ranks first among all Summit League long jump marks this indoor season and ranks third in the Roos all-time men's indoor long jump leaderboard.Â
- Jaleesa McWashington - McWashington will be jockeying for medal contention in three events this weekend including the women's 60-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump. The fifth year senior's best long jump mark this indoor season came at the Alexis Jarrett Invitational where McWashington jumped a total of 5.66 meters, giving her the 13th best women's long jump mark in the conference. Additionally, McWashington ranks 12th in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 11.67 meters and 8th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.66 seconds.Â
- Brooke Williams - Williams has been rock solid for the Roos in the women's triple jump this indoor season. The Overland Park, Ka. native totaled a jump of 11.95 meters at the Ichabod Invitational, giving the sophomore a new career-best triple jump mark. Williams' 11.95 meter triple jump mark ranks 8th best in the conference heading into the Summit League Indoor Championships, giving Williams a chance to contend among the league's top triple jumpers this weekend.
