The Roos out-scored the Tigers in the first, second and third quarters before yielding the lead in the fourth and overtime
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Kansas City Women's Basketball gave Missouri everything they could handle in a 71-67 overtime loss inside Mizzou Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Roos held a lead over the Tigers at the end of the first, second and third quarters but were unable to finish Missouri off in the fourth, getting out-scored by four points in the fourth quarter and the deciding overtime period. Despite the ultimate defeat, Kansas City continues to prove they can hang with the tougher out-of-conference opponents on the Roos schedule.
The game started with a strong presence in the paint as Elauni Bennett and Tierra Trotter were able to maneuver their way to the cup and score numerous times on the Tigers interior defense. Trotter hit a pull-up jumper at the 4:06 mark of the first frame to claim a 8-7 KC lead, one that the Roos would not until nearly halftime. The Roos kept the pedal to the medal in the second quarter with Trotter continuing to pepper the Mizzou defense with shots at the basket and in the mid-range. Consecutive three pointers from Jamyah Winter and then Trotter put Kansas City in front 31-24, giving the Roos their largest lead of the game. Missouri closed the half on a 10-5 run, leaving KC with just a two-point edge at the halfway break.
Kansas City was able to manage an early third quarter storm by Missouri, coming back from down seven, 39-46, to up four, 50-46 behind a 11-0 scoring run. Four different Roos scored baskets in that span, including five points with a big three pointer by Emani Bennett to cap the 11-0 run and give the Roos a four-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter. After back-to-back three pointers to open the fourth, Kansas City settled down and went to El. Bennett. The junior guard put her head down and finished through contact multiple times, keeping Kansas City within striking distance as Missouri got hot from long range. With under two minutes to go, Em. Bennett knocked down an in-between jumper to make it a 59-61 game. Following a miss on one end, E. Bennett found redemption, poking the ball loose on defense and going coast to coast for the game-tying layup with under a minute to play.
Neither team was able to register the go-ahead bucket late, leading the close contest to fall into the hands of overtime. In the extra period, Kansas City had to pull from behind for most of the frame. A Trotter layup cut the deficit to two and the graduate guard nabbed a steal and proceeded to get fouled on the other end. Trotter made the first free throw but missed the second, leading to a scrum for the basketball in a 67-68 game with under 10 seconds remaining. Possession was awarded to Missouri with the Tigers sinking the put away free throw and ending Kansas City's valiant upset bid. Three Roos scored in double figures with Trotter scoring a team-high 21 points while posting three rebounds, two assists and two steals on 8-14 shooting from the floor and 2-5 from three. El. Bennett put in 15 points and five rebounds while going 7-13 from the field. Em. Bennett recorded her first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds vs. the Tigers.
Kansas City forced Missouri into 18 turnovers, making it the third time this season the Roos have forced 18-plus turnovers on a power conference opponent (Kansas 18, Arkansas 18). The Roos only committed nine turnovers themselves, the lowest number of miscues in a single game this season. The Roos shot 23 three pointers, tied for the most in a single game this season with the Kansas game to open the year. The Roos and Tigers were even at 46-all in the rebounding department and out-scored Mizzou 32-20 in points in the paint. However, the Roos 35% shooting overall and 21% shooting from three-point range held Kansas City back from springing the upset. Kansas City begins Summit League play on New Year's Eve with a 5 p.m. clash against Omaha to close out 2025.
