Elauni Bennett scored the go-ahead bucket, finishing with 18 points and 10 boards
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - This win felt like a long time coming for Kansas City Women's Basketball (4-10, 1-0 Summit). Five of KC's losses this season have come by 10 points or less and many have come after the Roos held a fourth quarter lead. The slate was wiped clean heading into 2026, opening Summit League play with a 61-59 win over Omaha (2-14, 0-1 Summit). Elauni Bennett was the best player on the court, going for 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting and adding 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
The first quarter was played neck-and-neck, but Omaha used a 10-point run to open the second frame and rode that to a three-point halftime lead. Kansas City was uncharacteristically cold from long range, going 1-of-11 from three in the first half. Paired with Emani Bennett, the Roos' leading scorer, going 0-of-7 from the floor left KC searching for answers. They came in the form of the other Bennett twin, who went for 10 points, six rebounds and two steals in the first half and kept the Roos in the game.
Omaha extended its lead to five points early in the second frame, but Kansas City responded in kind. Em. Bennett finally got going from the field with a pair of jumpers and Tierra Trotter found Jamayah Winter for a corner three that put KC well on its way to a game-best 11-point scoring spurt. The Roos' lead surged as large as eight points, but Omaha scored the final four points of the third quarter to remain within striking distance.
The Roos opened the fourth quarter cold from the floor, going 3:31 seconds without a bucket and allowing the Mavericks to reclaim the lead. Em. Bennett nailed her lone three-pointer of the night to take the lead right back, setting in motion a back-and-forth remainder of the game. Omaha took a one-point lead into the final minute, but El. Bennett stepped up big once again. She established position in the post, taking a pass over-top from Kelby Bannerman and finishing on the left side for the go-ahead bucket. The Roos forced a miss on the other end and Trotter nailed a floater late in the shot clock to help secure the win.
Kansas City is 1-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2020-21 season and moves to 8-4 all-time when playing Omaha at home. El. Bennett now has eight double-doubles in her Kansas City career, the most since Paige Bradford pulled down nine throughout her 2020-22 career. Trotter added 12 points, six assists and a season-high tying six rebounds while Em. Bennett pitched in with 11 points and three steals.
The Roos remain at home on Saturday afternoon, hosting South Dakota in a 2 p.m. tip off.
