Emani Bennett poured in 27 points and six rebounds on 48% shooting in 40 minutes
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Women's Basketball (2-8) played in another close game but couldn't execute well enough down the stretch, faltering in the fourth quarter to drop a 64-58 contest against Utah Valley (6-3) inside the Swinney Center on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines got out in front of the Roos early, going up by as many as 11 in the first quarter and taking a nine point advantage into halftime.
The Roos came out of the gate swinging in the third quarter, going on a 8-2 scoring run to open the frame up and closing the third outscoring the Wolverines by 10. The fourth quarter provided to be a grind for both teams but the Wolverines prevailed in the late stages to down KC's hopes of a victory. Emani Bennett powered Kansas City in the points department, pouring in 27 points, making it her second straight game of that exact figure in scoring.
Early on, Jumoke Adaramoye had the hot hand, notching two consecutive baskets in the first few minutes to keep the Wolverines defense at bay. Elauni Bennett found herself open under the rim to cut the deficit down to 11-10 at the 5:02 mark of the first. The quarter closed with Tierra Trotter hitting a pair of floaters in the lane but the Roos trailing 23-14 through the first 10 minutes. The second quarter proved to be a deadlocked affair with KC and UVU putting each other in strongholds offensively, only allowing a dozen points to each side.
Kansas City opened up the third quarter strong as Em. Bennett started to heat up offensively. The junior guard torched the Wolverines defense with jumper after jumper, two of which were key three pointers that chipped into the slight Utah Valley edge. Little by little, UVU's lead widdled away with each basket KC scored. Key moments in the Roos big third quarter included Funmi Amode's offensive rebound and put-back that made it a one point game at 42-41 with 3:47 to play and Em. Bennett's fallaway jumper on the baseline over two defenders that gave KC a 45-44 lead into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter saw continuous scoring opportunities for the Bennett twins with Elauni getting a tip-in shot off a rebound and Emani knocking in her third three of the game. Trotter put in a circus shot high off the glass that dropped which put KC up 52-50, the Roos final lead of the game. Utah Valley closed the game on a 14-6 run, enough to take down KC 64-58. Em. Bennett is the second player in NCAA DI hoops to score 27 points and commit no fouls while playing the entire game this season. Additionally, Amode racked up a career-high in rebounds with 15 boards, six coming on the offensive side of the glass. El. Bennett was the only other player to reach double figure, scoring 11 points on 4-6 shooting from the field.
Kansas City out-rebounded the Wolverines 37-27 while hauling in 14 offensive rebounds for the game. The Roos committed 24 turnovers which Utah Valley turned into 30 points while Kansas City forced 19 Wolverine turnovers and only scored 14 points off those generated miscues. Kansas City shot 43% from the field to UVU's 42% while the Roos made 21% of their three point shots. Utah Valley also forced the issue in transition, out-scoring Kansas City 17-5 in fast break points.
The Roos move on to face Arkansas in Fayettvile, Ark. this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
