
Shooting Struggles Doom Roos in Loss to Governors

Elauni Bennett paced the team offensively, scoring a team-high 15 points
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In Kansas City's last three games, the Roos shot 53% from the field and 61% from three-point range. Those successful marks weren't replicated in the Roos second straight home loss as Kansas City (2-5) slipped 66-46 to Austin Peay (4-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Swinney Center.
The game was physical from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer with Kansas City cutting an Austin Peay lead down to one possession after Elauni Bennett's first basket of the contest. El. Bennett and Tierra Trotter provided much needed offensive assistance to close out the quarter with KC down eight points. Jamyah Winter and Emani Bennett scored the Roos last seven points of the half as Kansas City went down 32-22 at the break.
The Roos ratcheted up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, only yielding eight points to the Governors and allowing eight shot attempts in the frame. Kansas City out-scored Austin Peay 14-8 in the third behind the Bennett twins combining for 11 points of their own in the quarter.
KC got a boost of momentum when Trotter hit a deep three pointer as the clock expired to cut the deficit down to four. The Roos came out of the gate in the fourth with a surge of energy as El. Bennett scored a basket plus a foul and then converted another a possession later to make the score 42-41 at the 8:29 mark of the fourth. From there, the Governors went on 24-5 run to close the game out emphatically.
The Roos shot 29% from the floor and 30% from three while the Governors shot 49% from the field and 25% from deep. Kansas City committed 20 turnovers but forced Austin Peay into 16 of their own. The Governors also out-rebounded KC 39-30 scored more points in the paint 34-24 and more points from the bench, 27-8 for the game.
El. Bennett led the Roos in scoring with 15 points on 5-11 shooting from the field while Em. Bennett scored 11 points to join her sister as the only Roos who notched double figure scoring outings. Trotter chipped in nine points and five assists while Zaire Harrell pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.
Up next, Kansas City goes to Greeley, Colo. to face off against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.
