Offense Stalls in Second Half, Roos Can't Keep Up With Bears

Jamyah Winter led Kansas City in scoring dropping a baker's dozen with four three pointers
GREELEY, Colo. -- Kansas City Women's Basketball (2-6) got out to a strong start, leading Northern Colorado (7-2) 34-27 at halftime but yielded several runs in the second half leading to the Roos ultimate 72-59 defeat in game one of the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge on Wednesday night. It was a defensive battle early on with Kansas City and Northern Colorado tied at 4-4 through the first five minutes. One of Jamyah Winter's four three pointers helped the Roos break loose from the Bears and gain a steady advantage, leading 13-8 at the end of the opening quarter.Â
KC kept the pressure on to start the second frame with Kelby Bannerman scoring six straight points herself for the Roos. Jumoke Adaramoye scored nine points in the first half including her fist three pointer of the season. The Roos were aided by baskets along the interiror from Elauni Bennett and Zaire Harrell. Kansas City led by as many as nine points 28-19 but yielded a 8-6 run to end the half.Â
Kansas City couldn't put the ball in the basket for the first sequences of the third quarter, only scoring one point off a Bannerman free throw until the 3:53 mark of the quarter. The Roos were kept afloat by Winter, who drilled two three pointers in a row, the second of which was a four point play. KC's last advantage of the game came at the 1:24 mark of the third, leading 44-43. From there, KC proceeded to yield a 29-15 run to end the game, getting out-scored by 20 points in the second half, 11 in the third and by nine in the fourth.Â
Kansas City shot 43% from the field for the game to UNC's 42% and hit 37% from deep while the Bears shot just 13% from deep. The Roos were slightly out-rebounded 35-31 and surrendered one more offensive board than the Bears 13-12. KC comitted six more turnovers than the Bears, 19-13 and had four players register multi-turnover games. The Roos were led in scoring by Winter who notched 13 points and connected on four three pointers going 4-9 from deep. El. Bennett and Bannerman both finished with 12 points each. El. Bennett had a double-dobule with 12 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double of the season.Â
Kansas City continues the Big Sky/Summit League Challenge by taking on Portland State inside the Swinney Center at 2 p.m. this Saturday afternoon.Â
