Kansas City shoots over 50% from the field and from three for the fifth time in the Jackson-Durrett era
ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Kansas City Women's Basketball (1-3) led for the first three quarters of action Monday night against Lindenwood (3-1) but ultimately fell just short, dropping a 80-71 result at Robert F. Hyland Arena. All told, it was the Roos most impressive offensive showing of the young 2025-26 season as Kansas City went 27-47 (57%) from the floor and 7-12 (58%) from three point range, making it just the fifth time under Coach Jackson-Durrett that the Roos have topped the 50% marker from the field and from three in a single game.
As tip-off commenced, the Roos feasted off a steady diet of baskets along the inside from Elauni Bennett and constant outside splashes from Jamyah Winter. The duo scored nine of KC's first 11 points up until the 2:11 mark of the first frame. Kansas City kept their early momentum going, closing the first quarter on a 7-0 run thanks to a pair of buckets by Tierra Trotter.
Kansas City built an eight point advantage early on in the second quarter but an 11-2 Lindenwood run closed the gap as the Lions took a close 23-22 edge with just over six minutes to go until halftime. Following another downtown hit from Winter, El. Bennett went to work inside, scoring basket after basket and taming the Lions defense all half long. The Lee's Summit North HS product poured in 16 first half points, surpassing the season-best 14 point mark she posted last time out in Norman.
Holding a narrow two point edge at the break, 33-31, Kansas City got an electrifying moment from Winter, who nailed a three point shot and got fouled in the process, converting the four point play at the free throw line. Later on in the quarter, KC got the lead back via a Zaire Harrell putback and-one layup that elevated the Roos 44-41 with under five to play. Winter's fourth three pointer along with crucial baskets from Trotter and Nikole Thomas proved to be enough to hold KC's lead, 53-50 heading into the fourth quarter.
Less than a minute into the fourth, El. Bennett got a lefty layup to go, marking her new career-high of 22 points. The junior guard never saw a field goal percentage under 70% for the entire game. Following Bennett's career basket, the Lions went on a game-altering 8-0 run to put Lindenwood up 58-55. A fifth three ball by Winter tied things back up but not before the Lions went on a 9-0 run to stretch the gap out of reach for the Roos.
Kansas City out-shot the Lions from the field, 57-51%, and from deep, 58-39%, but the Roos were out-scored 30-18 in the fourth quarter and 17-3 in that critical stretch where Lindenwood broke away. The Roos were uncharacteristically out-rebounded by the Lions, 31-21 on the glass overall 17-7 on the offensive glass. The Roos also committed more turnovers than they forced, turning the ball over 20 times while only jarring 14 out of the Lions.
El. Bennett finished with 26 points, a career-high, eight rebounds and shot a remarkable 12-16 (75%) from the field. Winter notched 21 points, her most as a Roo, burying six three pointers and shooting 60% from behind the arc in the process. Harrell was the third and final Roos to crack double figures in scoring, putting up 11 points and six rebounds on 3-6 shooting from the field and going 5-5 from the foul line.
Following a three out of four game road stretch to open up the season, Kansas City enjoys a three game stay on home court, the first of which comes against Hesston on Thursday at noon.
