The Roos did set a program record for points in a half, scoring 64 on the Larks in the first half
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Women's Basketball (2-3) put together a team performance for the program record book on Thursday afternoon in a wire-to-wire 121-43 victory over Hesston (3-8) at the Swinney Center. The Roos high point total tied the program best that KC first accomplished in a 121-37 win over Kansas Christian in 2023. The Roos did set the program record for most points in a half, posting 64 on the Larks at the break.
Not only did the Roos rack up 100-plus points for the third time in the Jackson-Durrett era but Kansas City did so on remarkable efficiency. Against the Larks, Kansas City shot 61% from the floor and 68% from three point range, making it the third ever time the Roos have shot 60% from both the field and three in the same game and the second time done so in the Jackson-Durrett era.
Kansas City put up a dominant effort from the opening tip to the final buzzer, out-scoring Hesston 35-5 after the first quarter. The Roos opened the game going 15-26 (57%) from the floor and knocking down a flurry of shots from distance. KC continued to pour it on the rest of the way, showcasing high level shot making and pesky defense that flustered Hesston's offense all game long. Kansas City didn't have a quarter in which they shot under 50% from the field and notched 19 steals, two shy of the all-time program record.
Kelby Bannerman did a little bit of everything, leading the Roos in scoring off a career-high 28 points on 10-14 (71%) overall shooting along with grabbing nine rebounds, dishing out three assists, nabbing four steals and blocking three shots. Elauni Bennett joined Bannerman in the 20-plus point club, racking up 22 points and nine rebounds on 9-15 (60%) shooting in 22 minutes of action. For Bennett, it was her second straight game of scoring over 20 points and fourth consecutive game of shooting 60%-plus from the floor.
The Roos had 10 players get on the scoreboard, five of which reached double figures. Jamyah Winter recorded 18 points off six three pointers, all of which came in the first half. It was Winter's second consecutive game of six made triples, giving her a team-leading 18 treys this season. Hallie Majoros chipped in 14 points and canned four threes herself while Claudia Frances was the fifth member of the double figure scoring club, notching 12 points on 5-5 shooting.
All told, Kansas City put together a season-high in total points, points in a half, field goals made, field goal percentage, three pointers made, three point percentage free throws made, assists and steals. Kansas City focuses its attention to UTEP next Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the Roos second leg of a three home game stretch.
