Kansas City shot 31% overall while outrebounding the Sooners 13-8 on the offensive glass
NORMAN, Okla. – Kansas City Women's Basketball (1-2) showed no reason to hang their heads Wednesday night, staying in the fight with No. 6 Oklahoma (2-1) but ultimately getting overwhelmed in the second half and falling 89-61. Early on, the Roos were fueled by an avalanche of offense from Elauni Bennett. The third-year guard assumed the role of go-to scorer in the first quarter, scoring 12 points in the frame on perfect 5-5 shooting from the floor.
Kansas City remained pesky at several early junctions, using critical outside shots from Kelby Bannerman and Jamyah Winter only trailing by a lone point, 24-23, at the end of the first. KC shot 47% overall, 50% from three and 83% from the free throw line through the first 10 minutes of the game. From there, Oklahoma lived up to their national prominence, going on a 15-6 run in the second quarter to gain a distinct advantage. Seven of those 15 points were scored by OU's Aaliyah Chavez, who finished the game with 29 points and seven three pointers.
The Roos were outscored in the second quarter 23-10 and trailed by 14 at the halftime break. Still, El. Bennett's presence was felt by everyone around her on the floor, scoring 14 points and grabbing five rebounds, four offensive boards, on 6-6 shooting from the field in the first half alone. The second half saw Kansas City trade baskets with the Sooners but the Roos were unable to come up with the run they needed to climb back into the game.
El. Bennett totaled 19 points and eight rebounds on 7-10 shooting and went 5-6 from the free throw line, a single game career-best in made free throws for the Lee's Summit, Mo. native. Elsewhere on the perimeter, Kansas City saw notable contributions from Bannerman, who finished with 11 points, her highest scoring output of the season, five rebounds, two assists and a block.
Winter chipped in nine points including a barrage of key three pointers to finish the game at 40% from distance. Tierra Trotter also recorded a double-digit scoring performance with 11 points while shooting 8-10 from the foul line to go along with four assists. As a team, the Roos shot 31% overall to Oklahoma's 55% and the Sooners also hit over half their shots from behind the arc, going 10-19 there. KC held tough on the glass, getting slightly outrebounded at 37-31 overall but hauled in five more offensive boards than the Sooners at 13-8.
Kansas City gets ready for another road challenge, going to St. Charles, Mo. to face off against Lindenwood at 6 p.m. next Monday night.
